Battle of Khandaq (Trench) – Madinah

The Battle of Khandaq (also known as the Battle of the Trench, Battle of Ahzab, or Battle of the Confederates) took place in 5 AH (627 CE) outside Madinah. It was a decisive confrontation where the Muslims, under the leadership of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, defended the city against a confederate army of nearly 10,000 Quraysh and allied tribes, led by Abu Sufyan.

The strategy of digging a trench (khandaq) around the vulnerable side of Madinah was suggested by Salman al-Farisi (RA), a tactic unfamiliar to the Arabs. The trench effectively blocked the enemy cavalry and forced a long siege of nearly a month. Despite repeated attempts, the Quraysh and their allies failed to breach the defense.

During the siege, harsh winds and internal disputes weakened the confederates. Notably, ‘Amr ibn Abd Wudd, a veteran warrior, crossed the trench but was defeated in single combat by Ali ibn Abi Talib (RA). Eventually, the enemy retreated in humiliation, marking a turning point in Islamic history.

Among the martyrs was Sa’d ibn Mu’adh (RA), chief of the Ansar, who was wounded by an arrow and later passed away. His death was so significant that, according to hadith, the Throne of Allah shook at his martyrdom.

The Battle of Khandaq taught the Muslims the importance of unity, discipline, and reliance on Allah, while also showcasing the Prophet’s ﷺ wisdom in adopting new strategies. This battle marked the last major attempt by Quraysh to destroy Islam militarily, after which the Muslims steadily grew in strength and influence.
