Information Of Jabal Arafat (Mount Arafat)

🕋 Jabal Arafat (Mount Arafat)

Jabal Arafat (Arabic: جبل عرفات) is a granite hill located on the plain of Arafat, about 20 km east of the Ka’bah in Makkah. It holds immense significance during Hajj, as standing on Arafat on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah is the central pillar of the pilgrimage. Pilgrims gather here on this day after traveling from Mina.

The mountain is also known as Jabal al-Rahmah, meaning “The Mountain of Mercy.”

🌙 The Meaning of Arafat

The word ‘Arafat’ comes from the Arabic root ‘arafa, which means “to know” or “to recognize.” It is believed that after being sent down from Paradise, Prophet Adam (AS) and Hawwa (AS) were reunited on this mountain, hence the name.

  • ‘Arafah (عرفة) refers to the Day of Arafat.

  • ‘Arafat (عرفات) refers to the land and mountain itself.

✨ Importance of Arafat in Hajj

The standing at Arafat (Wuquf Arafat) is the most essential ritual of Hajj. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

“Hajj is Arafat.” (Al-Hakim)

This means that without standing at Arafat on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah, Hajj is incomplete.

🌟 Virtues of the Day of Arafat

Numerous ahadith emphasize the greatness of this day:

  • Forgiveness & Mercy – Aisha (RA) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said:

“There is no day on which Allah frees more people from the Fire than the Day of Arafat. He draws near and then He praises them to the angels, saying: ‘What do these people want?’” (Muslim)

  • Shaytan’s Defeat – The Prophet ﷺ said:

“There is no day on which Shaytan is seen more humiliated, more cast out, more angry, and more defeated than on the Day of Arafat, because he sees the descent of Allah’s mercy and His forgiveness of great sins.” (Mishkat)

🤲 Du’a on the Day of Arafat

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“The best supplication is the one made on the Day of Arafat, and the best of what I and the Prophets before me have said is: ‘La ilaha illa Allah, wahdahu la sharika lahu, lahul-mulk wa lahul-hamd, wa huwa ‘ala kulli shay’in qadeer.’” (Tirmidhi)

This means:
“There is no god but Allah, He is One and has no partner. To Him belongs the kingdom, to Him belongs all praise, and He has power over all things.”

🌙 Fasting on the Day of Arafat

Fasting on this day holds immense reward for those not performing Hajj. Abu Qatadah (RA) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:

“Fasting on the Day of Arafat expiates the sins of the past year and the coming year.” (Muslim)

  • For non-pilgrims, fasting is highly recommended (mustahabb).

  • For pilgrims in Arafat, it is not Sunnah to fast, as the Prophet ﷺ himself did not fast on that day during Hajj.

💭 Reflections at Jabal Arafat

Jabal Arafat is a place of du’a and deep spiritual connection. Both the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Prophet Ibrahim (AS) are reported to have supplicated here.

  • The heart of the pilgrim should be filled with humility and a sense of need before Allah ﷻ.

  • It is a unique opportunity to ask Allah for forgiveness, blessings, and guidance.

  • Missing out on heartfelt supplication here means losing the chance of a promised response from the Almighty.
