Information Of Masjid al-Ghamama (مسجد الغمامة)
Masjid al-Ghamama (مسجد الغمامة)
Masjid al-Ghamama is a small yet historically significant mosque located about 300 meters southwest of Masjid an-Nabawi in Madinah. It is closely linked to some of the most memorable events during the final years of Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ life.
The name Ghamama means “cloud”, referring to the clouds that appeared and brought rain after the Prophet ﷺ offered a prayer for rain at this site.
Historical Significance
Eid Prayers
The Prophet ﷺ is reported to have performed Eid salah here during the last four years of his life.
Because of this, the mosque is also known as Masjid Eid.
Salat al-Istisqa (Prayer for Rain)
The Prophet ﷺ led the special prayer for rain (Istisqa) here.
Immediately after his supplication, clouds (ghamama) appeared, and rain fell — giving the mosque its name.
Janazah Prayer of Najashi (RA)
This location is also associated with the funeral prayer for Najashi, the Christian Emperor of Aksum (Ethiopia).
Najashi had given refuge to the early Muslims during the persecution in Makkah and later accepted Islam.
When he passed away, his body was in Abyssinia, so the Prophet ﷺ offered Salat al-Janazah in absentia (Salat al-Gha’ib) here — the only such prayer he ever performed without the deceased being present.
Current Practice
Due to its close proximity to Masjid an-Nabawi, the five daily prayers are not held at Masjid al-Ghamama.
Instead, it remains a historical and spiritual landmark for visitors.
