Information Of Mina (منى) – The Valley of Sacrifice and Reflection

.

🕋 Mina (منى) – The Valley of Sacrifice and Reflection

Mina (Arabic: منى) is a sacred valley located about 6 km east of Masjid al-Haram in Makkah. It holds immense significance during the days of Hajj, as pilgrims spend the nights of 8th, 11th, 12th, and for some even the 13th of Dhul Hijjah in this valley.

Mina is also home to the Jamarat, the three stone pillars that pilgrims pelt with pebbles as part of the ritual known as Rami al-Jamarat.

📖 Mina in the Qur’an

Allah ﷻ references Mina in the Qur’an:

“And remember Allah during the appointed days. Then whoever hastens to leave in two days – there is no sin upon him; and whoever delays [until the third] – there is no sin upon him – for the one who fears Allah. And fear Allah, and know that to Him you will be gathered.”
(Surah al-Baqarah, 2:203)

📌 Meaning of the Word “Mina”

The word Mina comes from the root ma-na-ya, which means “to be tested” or “to undergo a trial.”

  • It is connected to the great trial of Prophet Ibrahim (عليه السلام), who was commanded to sacrifice his son. When he proved his obedience, Allah replaced his son with a ram. Thus, Mina is known as “the place of trial and success.”

  • Another meaning of Mina is “to flow,” referring to the flowing of sacrificial blood during Eid al-Adha.

  • It also conveys hope and desire, as connected with the words manna and tamanna.

🐪 Sacrifices of the Prophet ﷺ at Mina

During his Farewell Hajj, on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah, the Prophet ﷺ:

  • Stoned the Jamarat,

  • Returned to his camp at Mina,

  • Personally sacrificed 63 camels (matching his age at that time),

  • Delegated Ali ibn Abi Talib (رضي الله عنه) to sacrifice the remaining 37 camels,

  • Ordered that parts of each camel be cooked and shared with his Companions.

After completing the sacrifices, the Prophet ﷺ had his head shaved. An emotional moment was witnessed when Khalid ibn al-Walid (رضي الله عنه) requested a portion of the Prophet’s blessed hair, which he kept with reverence for the rest of his life.

🌌 The Cave of Mursalaat

Mina also contains the Cave of Mursalaat, where Surah al-Mursalaat was revealed to the Prophet ﷺ.

⛺ The Tent City of Mina

Today, Mina is known as the “Tent City”, covering about 20 km². It can accommodate more than 3 million pilgrims, housed in over 100,000 air-conditioned tents for safety and comfort.

🌟 Historical Reflections from Mina

  • It was here that the First Pledge of Aqabah was taken by 12 men from Madinah, pledging to worship only Allah, avoid sins such as theft and adultery, and obey in goodness.

  • This pledge marked a turning point in Islamic history, laying the foundation for Madinah to become the radiant center of Islam.

  • For pilgrims today, Mina is not only a place of rituals but also a reminder of the commitment, obedience, and love for Allah demonstrated by the companions.
